Unit 6 Outline - Storms and Floods
Storms and flooding are major weather hazards in many places. In areas like Bangladesh they can effect huge numbers of people who might find it difficult to manage the impacts effectively.
Don't forget to take a look at Depressions (BBC Bitesize
). They don't seem very important but you do need to know about them and the fronts that bring rain with them.
Key Content:
- How do storms develop? (both tropical storms and depressions)
- What problems do storms and flooding cause?
- How can areas be protected from storms and flooding?
Major Case Studies:
- A tropical storm such as Hurricane Ivan (BBC Summary
) or Katrina (BBC Reports
); - Flooding and flood management in an MEDC, for example the Mississippi flood management schemes (wiki
); - Flooding and flood management in an LEDC, such as in Bangladesh (Oxfam website
).
Make sure you can compare the effects and management of floods and storms in MEDCs and LEDCs
